Robust Machine Tool Thermal Error Modeling Through Thermal Mode Concept
نویسندگان
چکیده
Thermal errors are among the most significant contributors to machine tool errors. Successful reduction in thermal errors has been realized through thermal error compensation techniques in the past few decades. The effectiveness of thermal error models directly determines the compensation results. Most of the current thermal error modeling methods are empirical and highly rely on the collected data under specific working conditions, neglecting the insight into the underlying mechanisms that result in thermal deformations. In this paper, an innovative temperature sensor placement scheme and thermal error modeling strategy are proposed based on the thermal mode concept. The modeling procedures for both position independent and position dependent thermal errors are illustrated through numerical simulation and experiments. Satisfactory results have been achieved in terms of model accuracy and robustness. DOI: 10.1115/1.2976148

Parameter Estimation of the Thermal Network Model of a Machine Tool Spindle by Self-made Bluetooth Temperature Sensor Module
Thermal characteristic analysis is essential for machine tool spindles because sudden failures may occur due to unexpected thermal issue. This article presents a lumped-parameter Thermal Network Model (TNM) and its parameter estimation scheme, including hardware and software, in order to characterize both the steady-state and transient thermal behavior of machine tool spindles. For the hardware...
متن کاملEfficient Offline Thermal Error Modelling Strategy for Accurate Thermal Behaviour Assessment of the Machine Tool
Positional accuracy of the machine tool is affected by the instabilities caused by the thermal gradients produced from the internal and external heat sources. Thermal gradients cause linear and non linear thermal expansions of the complex machine parts which result in the generation of the positional error between the tool and the work piece affecting the machining accuracy. Thermal gradients d...

A clustering method is an effective way to select the proper temperature sensor location for thermal error modeling of machine tools. In this paper, a new temperature sensor clustering method is proposed. By analyzing the characteristics of the temperature of the sensors in a heavy floor-type milling machine tool, an indicator involving both the Euclidean distance and the correlation coefficien...
متن کاملEfficient Offline Thermal Modelling for Accurate Assessment of Machine Tool Thermal Behaviour
Thermal gradients from internal and external heat sources cause instabilities which affect the machine tool positional accuracy. Positioning error results from deformation of the machine structure due to linear thermal expansions of some machine parts combined with the thermal behaviour of associated complex discrete structures producing non linear thermal distortions. Thermal gradients due to ...
متن کاملFlexible Modelling and Compensation of Machine Tool Thermal Errors
Geometric errors on CNC machine tools have reduced significantly over the past few decades and compensation either through the controller or with retrofit systems have helped improve accuracy even further. This move is driven by a trend of ever tightening tolerances on components manufactured on these machines, especially where simplified assembly is required such as the Aerospace industries. T...
